Abuja, Nigeria – President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has conferred the Nigerian national honour of Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR) on Mr. Bill Gates, Co-Chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, in recognition of his outstanding global humanitarian efforts and longstanding support for development in Nigeria and across Africa.
The award presented on Tuesday, 3rd June 2025 at the State House in Abuja acknowledged Mr. Gates’ decades-long commitment to global health, the eradication of polio, education reform, digital innovation, and agricultural development. Through the Gates Foundation and other initiatives, Mr. Gates has helped save millions of lives and uplifted communities worldwide.

President Tinubu praised the philanthropist for his transformative impact, stating: “Bill Gates’ contributions have saved millions through the Gates Foundation and other initiatives. His efforts have uplifted communities, inspired global action, and improved lives—especially in Nigeria.”
The two leaders also engaged in discussions aimed at strengthening collaboration in critical areas such as health systems development, technological innovation, and youth empowerment.
President Tinubu emphasized Nigeria’s openness to partnerships that foster progress and improve human development outcomes. “We reaffirm our shared belief that real progress begins when we invest in people,” President Tinubu stated. “Nigeria remains open to ideas, partnerships, and actions that move humanity forward.”
The conferment of the CFR honour confirms Nigeria’s appreciation for global allies whose work aligns with the nation’s development priorities and aspirations for a healthier, more equitable future.
