The Nigerian Bar Association’s Section on Public Interest and Development Law (NBA-SPIDEL) has announced the formation of its Public Interest Litigation Committee, tasked with challenging unconstitutional and unlawful actions by both government and private entities across Nigeria.

The development follows the appointment of a Transitional Committee for NBA-SPIDEL by the President of the Nigerian Bar Association. Chairman of the Section, Prof. Paul Ananaba, SAN, in a statement on Wednesday, 13 August 2025, said the committee comprises some of the country’s leading public interest litigation practitioners and will serve as a vital arm in promoting the rule of law, human rights, constitutionalism, and due process.

The committee will focus on executive, legislative, and administrative actions that contravene the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria or any other laws, as well as acts by private entities deemed to undermine public interest, safety, and law and order.

Members of the committee include Olukunle Edun, SAN (Chairman), Casmir Elele, SAN, Inibehe Effiong, Esq., Olajide Akinola, Esq., Chukwuemeka Nwaogu, Esq., Vincent Adodo, Esq. (Secretary), Felix Akpowowo, Esq., Mojirayo Ogunlana, Esq., Lawrence Ojo-Gabriel, Esq., Mohammed Danjuma, Esq., Godspower Eroga, Esq., Chikodi Okeorji, Daniel Asomeji, Ali Jamilu, S. Longwilliams, Odumabo Godwins, Izuchukwu C. Nsofor, and Ayuba Rabiu.

Prof. Ananaba stressed that the committee is expected to deploy the “powerful instrument of public interest litigation and advocacy” to ensure the legal profession reclaims its place as the custodian of justice and constitutional values in Nigeria.
