Benue State, Nigeria – Former presidential candidate and Labour Party leader, Mr. Peter Obi, has once again expressed deep sorrow over the ongoing violence in Benue State, describing the killings as “tragic, senseless, and intolerable.” In a statement released via his official social media account on June 4 2025, Obi extended his condolences to the people of Benue and called for urgent, decisive action to restore peace and justice.

“The pain, anguish, and sorrow being experienced across Benue are not only heartbreaking but also a grave indictment of a nation that is repeatedly failing its own people,” Obi said.

He lamented the persistence of violent attacks in Benue, Kogi, and Plateau States, emphasizing that the continued loss of innocent lives is unacceptable. Obi reiterated his earlier concerns, previously raised on May 28, 2025, about Nigeria’s deteriorating security situation and the increasing wave of violence in the Middle Belt region.

In a significant development, Obi commended the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oloyede, for relocating to Benue along with his Principal Staff Officers, a move he described as a welcome step toward prioritizing the safety of the region.

“I earnestly pray that this action brings lasting change for the good and resilient people of Benue, who deserve not only protection but also meaningful justice,” Obi stated.

He urged that the protection and survival of citizens must be the foremost duty of any responsible government and called on national leaders to adopt a more compassionate and comprehensive approach to security.

“The blood of innocent Nigerians cries out for justice… A safe Nigeria is POssible,” he concluded.

Obi’s statement echoes growing national concern over the frequent communal and terrorist attacks in Nigeria’s conflict-prone areas and reinforces calls for sustained government action to ensure the safety and dignity of all Nigerians.
