The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has issued a clarification on its role in the recent incident involving an Ibom Air passenger at the Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal 2 (MM2) in Lagos on Sunday, August 10.

In a statement released via its official handle on Friday, August 15, FAAN explained that the initial response to the August 10 incident was managed by Ibom Air security personnel and the Bi-Courtney Aviation Security Team, as MM2 is a privately-operated terminal. FAAN’s Aviation Security (AVSEC) team, the agency noted, only became involved after the passenger was transferred for documentation and subsequent handover to the Nigeria Police for prosecution.

FAAN’s Aviation Security (AVSEC) unit became involved only after the individual was transferred to the Crime Investigation and Intelligence Unit, popularly known as “Tango City,” for official documentation and subsequent handover to the Nigeria Police for prosecution.

The Authority further clarified the security responsibilities within MM2, noting that while FAAN AVSEC officers oversee passenger and baggage screening at designated checkpoints, the Bi-Courtney Aviation Security Team is responsible for general terminal security operations.

Reassuring the traveling public, FAAN reaffirmed its commitment to continuous training and retraining of aviation security officers, while stressing that only institutions certified by the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) are authorised to provide certification-related trainings.

“FAAN reiterates its unwavering commitment to maintaining the highest standards of safety, security, and professionalism across all airport facilities nationwide,” the statement read.

The clarification comes amid heightened public interest in airport security and passenger safety across Nigeria’s major aviation hubs.
