Anambra, Nigeria – The National Primary Healthcare Development Agency has called upon traditional rulers in the South East region to actively participate in the delivery of primary healthcare services within their communities. This collaborative effort aims to accelerate the access and uptake of essential healthcare services among community members.
During the 2023 first Quarter Review meeting of the South East Traditional Committee (SETRC) on Primary Healthcare Delivery, held in Awka, Anambra State, on Wednesday, June 21st, the Executive Director of the Agency, Dr. Faisal Shuaib, addressed the traditional rulers from the states of Anambra, Imo, Abia, Ebonyi, and Enugu. Dr. Shuaib recognized the influential role of these esteemed leaders and implored them to champion the cause of primary healthcare within their communities.
“As custodians of our cultural heritage and esteemed rulers, your role in shaping the health landscape is invaluable,” Dr. Shuaib stated. “Your support in promoting primary healthcare is crucial, as your voice carries weight. Your endorsement of primary healthcare initiatives can significantly impact public perception and behavior.”
Dr. Shuaib further urged the traditional rulers to utilize their esteemed platforms to raise awareness about the importance of preventive care, early detection, and regular health check-ups. By emphasizing the benefits of timely intervention and the life-saving impact of primary healthcare services, such as immunization, they can empower their people to take charge of their health and well-being.
As members of the South East Traditional Committee on Primary Healthcare Delivery, the traditional rulers were also tasked with lending their voices as advocates for the health sector. Dr. Shuaib implored them to engage with policymakers, government officials, and relevant stakeholders to advocate for increased investment in primary healthcare.
“Your Majesties, your role as advocates for the health sector is paramount,” Dr. Shuaib emphasized. “I implore you to lend your voice to this cause and collaborate with policymakers and stakeholders to ensure the appropriate allocation of healthcare resources. By doing so, we can enhance human resources for health, expand access to quality healthcare services, and improve the infrastructure and equipment of our primary healthcare centers.”
