Ibom Air Passenger Saga: FAAN Explains Involvement at MM2

0

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has issued a clarification on its role in the recent incident involving an Ibom Air passenger at the Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal 2 (MM2) in Lagos on Sunday, August 10.

In a statement released via its official handle on Friday, August 15, FAAN explained that the initial response to the August 10 incident was managed by Ibom Air security personnel and the Bi-Courtney Aviation Security Team, as MM2 is a privately-operated terminal. FAAN’s Aviation Security (AVSEC) team, the agency noted, only became involved after the passenger was transferred for documentation and subsequent handover to the Nigeria Police for prosecution.

FAAN’s Aviation Security (AVSEC) unit became involved only after the individual was transferred to the Crime Investigation and Intelligence Unit, popularly known as “Tango City,” for official documentation and subsequent handover to the Nigeria Police for prosecution.

The Authority further clarified the security responsibilities within MM2, noting that while FAAN AVSEC officers oversee passenger and baggage screening at designated checkpoints, the Bi-Courtney Aviation Security Team is responsible for general terminal security operations.

Reassuring the traveling public, FAAN reaffirmed its commitment to continuous training and retraining of aviation security officers, while stressing that only institutions certified by the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) are authorised to provide certification-related trainings.

“FAAN reiterates its unwavering commitment to maintaining the highest standards of safety, security, and professionalism across all airport facilities nationwide,” the statement read.

The clarification comes amid heightened public interest in airport security and passenger safety across Nigeria’s major aviation hubs.

Rights Lawyer Inibehe Effiong Meets NYSC DG Over Petition on Rita Uguamaye’s Service Extension

0

Abuja, August 13, 2025 – Human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong today met with the Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) at the Corps’ headquarters in Abuja to press for the immediate reversal of the two-month extension of service imposed on Ms. Rita Uguamaye, popularly known as Raye.

The meeting followed a formal petition submitted by Effiong on Tuesday, August 12, in which he described the extension as “unlawful and punitive,” and urged the NYSC to issue Uguamaye’s Certificate of National Service without delay.

“We have demanded that the DG take immediate steps to reverse this unjust extension. The law must apply equally to all Nigerians, and no Corps member should be subjected to arbitrary punishment,” Effiong said after the closed-door meeting.

It would be recalled that the case of Rita Uguamaye has generated significant public attention on social media, with many Nigerians viewing it as a test case for fairness and accountability within the NYSC system. The controversy comes on the heels of other recent public interest matters in Nigeria — including the August 10 Ibom Air incident in Uyo, where passengers protested alleged mistreatment by airline staff, and ongoing legal advocacy around police brutality and rights violations. In each of these cases, civil society actors have emphasized the importance of institutional transparency and the rule of law.

As of press time, the NYSC has not issued an official statement on the outcome of the meeting.

FG Orders Withdrawal of Criminal Complaint Against Ibom Air Passenger Comfort Emmanson, Lifts Lifetime Flight Ban

0

Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, CON, on Wednesday announced the withdrawal of the criminal complaint filed against Ms. Comfort Emmanson, the Ibom Air passenger involved in the August 10 incident that sparked public outrage.

In a statement released via his official X handle, Keyamo said the decision followed consultations with critical stakeholders in the aviation sector and appeals from well-meaning Nigerians.

He noted that while “clear wrongs were committed by both the offending passengers and airline staff,” valuable lessons had been learned, and airport security protocols had been brought into sharper public focus.

Ibom Air Case
Keyamo revealed that Ibom Air had agreed to withdraw its complaint against Ms. Emmanson, who, according to the minister, “exhibited great remorse” when she gave her statement to the police in the presence of her lawyer. Following the withdrawal, the Lagos Airport Police Command and the prosecuting team will facilitate her release from Kirikiri Prisons within the week.

He also confirmed that the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) had agreed to lift the lifetime flight ban imposed on her.

Other High-Profile Aviation Cases
On the case involving music icon Wasiu Ayinde Marshall (KWAM 1) and ValueJet staff, Keyamo said the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) had reduced KWAM 1’s flight ban to one month and would work with him as an ambassador for airport security protocol. The NCAA will also withdraw its criminal complaint against the musician.

Similarly, the one-month suspension imposed on ValueJet’s Captain Oluranti Ogoyi and First Officer Ivan Oloba will be lifted after they undergo mandatory professional reappraisal.

Security and Customer Service Overhaul
Keyamo further directed that a retreat be held next week for aviation and complementary security agencies to retrain personnel on handling unruly passengers and de-escalating tense situations. Airlines will also hold sessions focusing on staff conduct towards passengers.

The minister stressed that the decisions were made on “compassionate grounds” and should not be mistaken for political or sentimental concessions. “We take safety and security in the aviation sector very seriously, and we have decided to draw a line after these clemencies,” he said.

Ibom Air Bans Passenger for Violent Conduct on Board Uyo–Lagos Flight

By Esther Victory

UYO – Ibom Air has banned a passenger, Ms. Comfort Emmanson, from all its flights following a violent incident aboard its Uyo–Lagos service on Sunday, August 10, 2025.

According to a statement issued by the airline on Monday, the trouble began shortly before take-off from Uyo when Ms. Emmanson refused to switch off her mobile phone despite repeated instructions from the cabin crew in line with standard aviation safety procedures. It was only after the Pilot-in-Command made an announcement that a fellow passenger seated beside her intervened and switched off the device.

The statement said this triggered “a verbal tirade” from Ms. Emmanson, though the situation was calmed, allowing the flight to depart as scheduled.

Upon arrival in Lagos, however, Ms. Emmanson allegedly waited until all passengers had disembarked before confronting the Purser who had earlier instructed her to turn off the phone. She reportedly stepped on the crew member, forcibly tore off her wig, removed her glasses and threw them to the floor, and assaulted her with her footwear.

“She slapped her several times, and when another cabin crew member tried to intervene, she slapped her too,” the airline said. Ms. Emmanson then allegedly attempted to remove a fire extinguisher to use as a weapon, an act Ibom Air warned could have damaged and grounded the aircraft.

It would be recalled that the viral video circulating on social media shows the Purser blocking the passenger from leaving the aircraft until security arrived. The airline noted that Ms. Emmanson also attacked Ibom Air security personnel when they boarded, and later assaulted the ground supervisor after being escorted off the plane.

She was eventually taken into custody by Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) security and handed over to the Nigeria Police Force for investigation.

Ibom Air said it has submitted a detailed report to the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and imposed a permanent travel ban on Ms. Emmanson.

The airline reiterated its “zero-tolerance policy towards any form of unruly or violent conduct that threatens the safety of passengers, crew, or equipment,” warning that such behaviour will attract legal action and permanent restriction from its services.

“We commend the bravery and professionalism of our crew in handling this situation under extremely challenging circumstances, as well as the swift support from airport security and the Nigeria Police,” the statement concluded.

The Moment for Women will continue follow the incident and we call for thorough investigation and justice for Ms. Emmanson

Peter Obi Condemns Assault and Public Stripping of Ibom Air Passenger, Calls Out Double Standards

0

By Solomon Asuquo.

Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has condemned what he described as “double standards” and “selective justice” in the handling of the recent Ibom Air incident involving Miss Comfort Emmanson.

On Sunday, August 10, 2025, a disturbing incident occurred aboard an Ibom Air Uyo–Lagos-bound flight, sparking outrage across Nigeria. A female passenger, identified as Comfort Emmanson, was forcibly dragged out of the aircraft and stripped naked by airline officials.

Viral videos and social media posts allege that Emmanson was accused of violating flight safety rules by failing to switch off her phone during the journey. However, the passenger insists she had set her phone to flight mode. Upon arrival in Lagos, an air hostess reportedly blocked her from disembarking, claiming security operatives had been called to arrest her. The confrontation escalated when Emmanson allegedly slapped the crew member.

In a statement on Monday, August 11, 2025, Obi apologised to the Ibom Air crew allegedly assaulted by Emmanson, urging Nigerians to uphold good conduct as a hallmark of decent living. However, he criticised the “dehumanising” treatment meted out to the young woman, including publicly stripping her before remanding her in custody.

Obi described the action as “unnecessary” and “the height of rascality and abuse” by security agencies, questioning why Emmanson was swiftly charged while another individual who allegedly delayed a flight and endangered hundreds of lives remains free, with some state officials calling for his pardon.

“This case is not just about one young woman, it is about the double standards that poison our justice system,” Obi stated. “Justice in Nigeria must never be about who is poor or powerless versus who has influence or access to government officials.”

The former Anambra governor stressed that Emmanson’s alleged offence “does not compare” to the crimes of politically connected individuals who loot public funds without consequence. He called on the Minister of Aviation and relevant authorities to explain the apparent bias in handling the cases.

“We must end this selective treatment of the poor or less privileged. If justice must be served, it should be served to all, and it must be served fairly,” Obi said, adding that the rule of law must remain the guidepost of democracy.

“A new Nigeria is possible,” he concluded.
