AfriHealth Optonet Association Condemns Barbaric Assault on Pharm. Kufre Ebong

0

Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria – In a disturbing incident that has sparked widespread outrage, the Afrihealth Optonet Association (AHOA) Nigeria vehemently condemns the reprehensible actions of Barrister Ekere Ebong, a Nigerian lawyer, who brutally assaulted and expelled his wife, Pharmacist (Mrs.) Kufre Ebong, from their home in the middle of the night.

A viral video circulating on social media captured the horrifying altercation, revealing a visibly distressed Mrs. Kufre Ebong being subjected to physical and emotional abuse. Stripped half-naked and left on the floor, the victim displayed visible signs of trauma, with blood dripping from her mouth.

In a press release issued and signed by Dr. Uzodinma Adirieje, CEO of Afrihealth Optonet Association, on December 18, 2023, AHOA called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of Barrister Ekere Ebong. The statement expressed deep concern for Mrs. Kufre Ebong’s well-being and demanded justice for the victim.

The press release reads, “Afrihealth Optonet Association (AHOA) condemns, in its totality, the wicked and dehumanizing actions that were inflicted on the body and psyche of pharmacist (Mrs.) Kufre Ebong. This incident, occurring just days after the conclusion of AHOA’s ’16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence,’ underscores the urgent need for intervention.”

AHOA applauded the swift response of the neighbors who courageously intervened, bringing the incident to public attention. The organization also commended the efforts of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) and the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) for their statements on the matter.

The press release further urged the Nigerian government, under the leadership of His Excellency President Bola Tinubu, GCFR, to support AHOA’s call, in collaboration with Every Woman Coalition, for an Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). This protocol would specifically address Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) in Nigeria and globally.

AHOA acknowledged the government of Akwa Ibom State for its efforts in combating gender-based violence and called for a thorough investigation, immediate arrest, and diligent prosecution of the perpetrator(s). The organization rejected any plea bargain, emphasizing the importance of enforcing the full weight of the law to serve as a deterrent against future abuses.

The Moment for Women has learned that Mrs. Kufre Ebong, a pharmacist, endured this abusive situation for over four years. A concerned neighbor, speaking during the incident, revealed, “Barrister Ebong has been battering his wife for the past four years, and no one says anything. Because no one has been speaking up, I’ve lived in this compound for more than four years, and he has been beating his wife.”

In a recent update, The Moment for Women has gathered that the case has been formally reported to the police. We are pleased to share that FIDA Akwa Ibom has taken up representation on behalf of the victim.

As an organization committed to advocating for women’s rights and safety, The Moment for Women remains steadfast in its commitment to monitor and report on the progress of this case. We aim to ensure transparency, accountability, and a swift resolution that upholds the rights and dignity of Pharmacist Kufre Ebong.

Urgent Appeal for Humanitarian Ceasefire in Gaza Goes Unheeded by Security Council

By Solomon A.

In a desperate plea, UN Secretary-General António Guterres took to Twitter to express deep concern for the people of Gaza, stating that they are “looking into the abyss.” Guterres urged the UN Security Council to spare no effort in pushing for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire, emphasizing the critical need for the protection of civilians and the urgent delivery of lifesaving aid.

However, despite the urgent call for action, the Security Council members failed to adopt a resolution during the meeting on Friday, December 8, 2023, calling for a humanitarian ceasefire in the Middle East. The repercussions of this failure are alarming, as humanitarian organizations, including the UN and its partners, have warned that the situation in Gaza is on the brink of total collapse.

Guterres, through his official Twitter account (@antonioguterres), emphasized the gravity of the situation in Gaza, where the civilian population is facing unprecedented challenges. The failure to pass a resolution demanding a ceasefire raises concerns about the international community’s ability to address humanitarian crises effectively.

The UN and its partner organizations have consistently highlighted the immediate need for a cessation of hostilities to allow for the delivery of lifesaving aid and the protection of innocent civilians caught in the crossfire. The situation in Gaza has reached a critical point, with humanitarian organizations warning of the devastating consequences if immediate action is not taken.

The Security Council’s inability to adopt a resolution intensifies the urgency for alternative diplomatic solutions and increases international cooperation. As the crisis deepens, the international community must come together to find a resolution that prioritizes the well-being of the people in Gaza and addresses the dire humanitarian situation.

As the world watches the unfolding crisis, the onus is on global leaders and the Security Council to reevaluate their approach and take immediate, concerted action to alleviate the suffering of the people of Gaza. TheMomentforwomen.com will continue to closely monitor the situation and provide updates on any further developments.

Women Empowerment: A Pathway to a More Equitable World

1

By: RICHA SHARMA

As an active volunteer working with many organizations dedicated to women’s empowerment, I am deeply committed to addressing the myriad challenges women face worldwide. From financial constraints to nutritional disparities, literacy gaps, and persistent gender inequalities, women’s path to empowerment is often fraught with obstacles. Today, I will focus on five critical areas of concern and propose actionable solutions to empower women and foster a more equitable world.

Bridging the Financial Gap

Despite significant progress, women continue to face a stark financial disadvantage. Globally, women are 70% more likely than men to live in extreme poverty. This financial disparity stems from various factors, including unequal access to education, employment opportunities, and financial services.

To address this challenge, we must promote financial literacy among women, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to manage their finances effectively, make informed decisions, and plan for the future. We must also expand access to financial services, breaking down barriers to financial inclusion by providing women with access to bank accounts, loans, and other financial services.

Supporting women-owned businesses is another crucial step towards bridging the financial gap. By fostering entrepreneurship and providing women-owned businesses with access to capital, training, and mentorship opportunities, we can empower them to achieve financial independence and contribute to economic growth.

Advocating for equal pay is essential to eliminating the gender pay gap. Enforcing equal pay laws, promoting wage transparency, and addressing unconscious gender bias in workplaces are critical steps toward ensuring that women are compensated fairly for their work.

Finally, we must strengthen social safety nets to alleviate women’s financial burdens. Comprehensive social safety nets, including childcare support, parental leave policies, and access to affordable healthcare, can provide women with the support they need to balance work and family responsibilities and achieve their full potential.

“Women are inbuilt financial solution providers and investors; we must empower their skills.”

Nourishing the Body and Mind

Women’s nutritional status is often overlooked, yet it plays a crucial role in their overall health, well-being, and productivity. Globally, nearly 2 billion women suffer from anemia, a condition caused by iron deficiency that can lead to fatigue, weakness, and impaired cognitive function.

Women usually tend to prioritize their family and often become careless towards their own needs. Raising awareness about their importance and encouraging their inclusion in women’s diets.

Addressing micronutrient deficiencies, such as vitamin A and zinc, through supplementation and dietary diversification programs is also essential. Supporting women’s participation in agriculture, and providing them with access to land, resources, and training to cultivate nutritious crops, can also enhance their nutritional status.

My Mother says– “You eat medicines, you eat alone, you eat nutritious food, you feed the whole family”

Prioritizing maternal and child nutrition programs, including prenatal care, breastfeeding support, and complementary feeding education, is crucial for promoting healthy growth and development in women and children.

Finally, addressing gender-based discrimination in food allocation is essential to ensure that women have equal access to nutritious food. By dismantling discriminatory practices and promoting gender equality, we can ensure that women are not disproportionately affected by food insecurity.

Unlocking the Power of Knowledge

Literacy is an essential tool for empowerment, enabling women to make informed decisions, gain access to information, and participate meaningfully in society. Yet, globally, 617 million adult women lack basic literacy skills.

To address this challenge, we must ensure that all girls have access to quality primary and secondary education, particularly in marginalized communities. Providing non-formal education opportunities for women who missed out on schooling, including literacy programs, skills training, and vocational education, is also crucial.

Utilizing technology to enhance literacy learning, such as mobile-based literacy apps and digital literacy programs, can further expand access to education and literacy skills.

Nurturing a culture of reading by providing access to libraries, establishing book clubs, and organizing reading events can foster a love of reading and promote literacy among women.

Finally, empowering women as educators and literacy instructors can enable them to share their knowledge and skills with others, creating a ripple effect of literacy empowerment.

There is an Indian Saying– “When a man is literate, only he is literate. But when a woman is literate, She literates three generations. (parents, in-laws, and kids)”

Dismantling Gender Stereotypes

Despite progress, gender stereotypes continue to permeate societies, limiting women’s opportunities and perpetuating discrimination. These stereotypes often reinforce gender roles that confine women to domestic spheres and limit their participation in leadership roles.

Often women have career gaps due to their marriage or pregnancy. It does not stop here, even after giving birth, women are given full responsibility to provide emotional support to the child and take care of them, be available for them, and help them full time to become good people.

Though there are multiple initiatives are there such as maternity leave, and babysitting facilities at the office, it is necessary to reevaluate the mindset of people to help women make an impact in the world. The role of men also needs to be redefined from financial supporter to life partner for a woman and available father for kids.

“Women are multitasking and emotionally strong, does not mean they should do it all alone”.

To challenge these harmful stereotypes, we must raise awareness about their negative impacts and promote gender equality through public awareness campaigns, media engagement, and educational programs.

Peter Obi Condemns Extravagance in 2024 Budget, Calls for Responsible Leadership

0

In a compelling Twitter commentary, former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party Presidential Candidate, Peter Obi, voiced deep concern over what he perceives as misplaced priorities in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 2024 budget, presented on Wednesday, November 29th, 2023. Titled the “Budget of Renewed Hope,” the proposal outlines a significant expenditure of 27.5 trillion naira for the Federal Government in 2024.

Obi, known for his fiscal prudence, questioned the government’s choices, especially in the face of economic challenges and widespread poverty.  He stated, “Even as I am still studying the 2024 fiscal budget, I cannot wait as I am compelled to ask: what is exactly wrong with us as a country?”

He emphasized the disparity between the allocated budget for the Vice President’s housing, totaling N20.5 billion when considering previous appropriations, and the urgent issues confronting the nation, including rising poverty rates, deteriorating health facilities, and soaring unemployment.

The former Governor drew attention to the opportunity cost of such budgetary decisions, noting that the funds earmarked for the Vice President’s residence could instead address critical needs like the annual salaries of thousands of university professors or support student loans. Obi emphasized the need for a more balanced and responsible fiscal approach, urging leaders to prioritize investments in human capital development.

His tweets read; “I ask this question because it is hard for me to understand some of the recent happenings in our nation, in these critical times. The recent news about a budget provision of N15 billion for the construction of a new residence for the Vice President is both shocking and disheartening, considering the many important challenges facing our nation. Just recently in the Supplementary Budget, the sum of N2.5 billion was included for the renovation of the Vice President’s residence in Abuja, which means that he already has a residence.”

“Again, during the budget presentation, I heard the sum of N3 billion was allocated for the renovation of the Vice President’s residence in Lagos. If we total all these sums, we would have budgeted the sum of N20.5 billion for the housing of the Vice President at this critical time when we are not just the world’s poverty capital, but more people are falling into poverty, with so many Nigerians not knowing where their next meal will come from. Our health facilities have collapsed, and unemployment is skyrocketing.”

“I am convinced that 99.9% of Nigerians can only dream of living in the current residence of the Vice President. Several people employed in the universities are not being paid. Just to give an example, the salary of a professor in a Nigerian university is about N400,000, which without removing tax is about N5 million a year. What we have budgeted for the housing of the Vice President who is already luxuriously housed is, therefore, the annual salary of about 3000 professors! This is the finance needed to develop the much-needed human capital.”

“Former Anambra Governor Urges Prioritization of National Development Over Luxuries”

“The budget of N5 billion for student loans, which is yet to be disbursed is only a tiny percentage of the cost of the Vice President’s new home. We are projecting to use four times the amount for educating ALL Nigerian indigent students to house the Vice President, and we are being told there is nothing wrong with us. I am sure the major teaching hospitals in Nsukka, Lagos, Ibadan, and Zaria did not receive this much capital vote in the budget this year. We have had leaders that were exemplary in the past.”

Obi, invoking a historical example of sacrificial leadership, said, “Most Nigerians may not know that the popular 1004 flats in Lagos were a land allocated for the building of a Presidential Mansion for the then Head of State, General Murtala Mohammed.” He used this example to emphasize the importance of leaders who prioritize the welfare of the masses over personal luxuries.

In his call for a shift in leadership mindset, Peter Obi appealed to Nigerian leaders to demonstrate frugality, empathy, and a genuine commitment to addressing the challenges faced by the masses. “We need leaders who show compassion and are willing to sacrifice for common progress and development. Such compassionate and frugal leaders are critical in our journey to the New Nigeria.”

This commentary by Peter Obi serves as a poignant call for responsible governance and a reevaluation of budgetary priorities, resonating with a broader narrative of the need for a “New Nigeria” grounded in prudent and compassionate leadership.

Charity Begins at Home: EFCC Urges Parents to Pave the Way for a Corruption-Free Nigeria

0

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Nigeria antigraft agency, has called on parents to help reduce crime and corrupt practices in Nigeria by being good examples and role models for their children. In a report released on December 1, 2023, and shared on the agency’s official Twitter page, Muhammad Hammajoda, the commission’s secretary, made the call during the meeting with members of the Advocacy for Positive Behavioral Patterns Initiative (AFPBPI) on November 28, 2023, at the EFCC’s corporate headquarters in Abuja, emphasizing the crucial role of parents in shaping the moral fabric of society, as detailed in a report released on December 1, 2023, and shared on the agency’s official Twitter page.

Recognizing the limitations of the EFCC in combating corruption single-handedly, Hammajoda urged parents nationwide to prioritize the upbringing of their children and set exemplary standards for integrity at home. Addressing the gathering, he stressed the need for collective efforts involving parents, role models, and other stakeholders in the fight against corruption.

“Our moral values have deteriorated, leading many youths into destructive behaviors such as drug abuse, dishonesty, corruption, and lack of self-control. Parents play a pivotal role in correcting and guiding their children, not only through words but, more importantly, by exemplifying positive behavior,” Hammajoda asserted.

Emphasizing the Commission’s commitment to preventive measures against corruption, Hammajoda expressed the EFCC’s readiness to collaborate with organizations like AFPBPI in raising awareness. He urged such organizations to become “foot soldiers” in reaching out to schools, emphasizing the significance of instilling positive values in children from a young age.

In response, Mann Bamidele, the Director of the Campaign Team of AFPBPI, highlighted the initiative’s goal of positively impacting the lives of children and youths by fostering early awareness and discouraging criminal activities. He emphasized the NGO’s dedication to supporting the EFCC’s mandate by offering sensitization programs and distributing a handbook designed to instill positive attitudes, particularly addressing issues like advance fee fraud.

Bamidele further expressed AFPBPI’s willingness to collaborate with the EFCC, offering assistance in capacity-building for EFCC personnel, sensitizing youths, and engaging various layers of society in promoting accountability.

This report was officially shared on the EFCC Nigeria Twitter page, @officialEFCC, underscoring the agency’s commitment to transparency and collaboration in the fight against corruption

Climate Change; Flood Takes over Lagos Road following a heavy downpour

0

November 3, 2023- The onset of the rainy season, marked by heavy downpours, has brought about significant challenges, particularly evident in the inundation of Agege Pen Cinema Road near the Ifako-Ijaiye bus terminal. The alarming frequency with which the road succumbs to floods has sparked concerns, creating a precarious situation for motorists, market vendors, and children alike.

The Moment for Women investigated the recurring issue on Friday, November 3rd, 2023, revealing that every rainfall transforms the entire stretch of the road into a waterlogged area. This leaves commuters, market traders, and even children with no choice but to navigate through the waterlogged path.

A keke rider, who preferred to remain anonymous, shared his distressing experience with The Moment for Women. He described how, when traversing the flooded road, his keke is submerged and the water comes into contact with his body, causing discomfort and irritation. A market woman, who sells pure water by the roadside, recounted a recent incident where she lost her merchandise after falling into the water. Frustrated, she lamented, “I lost my market last week because of the rainwater that covered the road.” She urged the authorities to intervene, highlighting the potential health hazards and disease outbreaks linked to the unclean water. “I pray the government comes to fix this road before something catastrophic occurs here,” she added.

The root cause of the persistent flooding is primarily attributed to inadequate drainage systems and the indiscriminate dumping of refuse in the gutters by market users. The accumulation of waste in the drainage channels exacerbates the problem, hindering the smooth flow of water during heavy rains.

As the community grapples with these challenges, urgent attention from relevant authorities is essential to mitigate the impact on the residents’ daily lives and avert potential health crises.

The Moment for Women advocates for prompt intervention to address the poor drainage and waste management issues, ensuring the safety and well-being of all affected individuals.
